Oral Roberts throws a two hitter to get the win

ORU starter Kurt Giller took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before tossing a complete game shutout to help the visiting Golden Eagles take a 6-0 win over SUU at Thunderbird Park on Thursday. The SUU defense turned in a solid performance behind a strong outing by starting pitcher Chase Rezac, but the Thunderbirds were unable to get on the scoreboard after recording just three hits and leaving seven runners on base.

“I give credit to Rezac for getting ground balls, and Ricker made a nice play spinning to his left for that bang-bang throw,” said interim coach Clayton Carson of the three double-plays turned by the T-Birds. “I also felt like we had some good contact considering that their pitcher was up in the nineties and throwing a hard slide piece.”

Oral Roberts notched its first run of the game in the top of the second when third baseman Jose Trevino hit a lead-off single, advanced to second on a walk and then came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of Bennett Pickar. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors until the Nate Goro put a two-run RBI single into centerfield in the sixth inning to extend the advantage to three.

The Thunderbirds had a chance to start a rally in the following frame as Mitchell Kauweloa and Chaisson Low started the seventh with back-to-back singles to give SUU two runners on with nobody out. ORU was able to record three-straight outs on a fielder’s choice, ground out and fly out to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Golden Eagles would then add three insurance runs in the top of the eighth to double their advantage to 6-0. Brandon Healy began the scoring with an RBI single to right and Goro laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Brandon King in from third for the second run of the inning. In the next at bat Logan Domenico hit an infield single to second base and it appeared that the Thunderbirds had Brandon Healy caught between third and home for the final out of the inning, but a throw from bounced off the ORU designated hitter allowing him to cross the plate for the sixth and final run of the game.

Junior right-hander Kurt Giller allowed just three hits and recorded six strikeouts while throwing a complete game to earn his second win of the season for the Golden Eagles and now holds a record of 2-4. SUU starter Chase Rezac spread three runs and 10 hits over six innings to fall to 2-4 with the loss.

Oral Roberts shortstop Nate Goro drove in three runs for the Golden Eagles who also got an RBI from Pickar and Healy. Senior first baseman Mitchell Kauweloa led Southern Utah with two hits on the day.

The Thunderbirds and Golden Eagles will continue their series with a doubleheader set to begin tomorrow at 12 p.m.

“I felt like our guys came out strong in the way they were able to get that run in the first inning,” said SUU interim coach Clayton Carson. “I give credit to UNLV and the way they played, they did a good job swinging the bat and hit the ball well.”

Conference starts for SUU starting Friday April 6th against Western Illinois. Good luck SUU and win conference!

Coaches get released from the baseball program

Southern Utah University officials, in a move supported by the University's Board of Trustees, released baseball coaches David Eldredge and Chase Hudson from their coaching responsibilities today. Its a sad day for all of SUU baseball fans because they are losing two great guys. Coach Eldredge was a great coach and they should of let him coach the remainder of the final season at SUU. Some speculations why both coaches got fired were because of going over budget and they way they used school money.  I wish the best for both of these wonderful guys!

SUU once again struggles in their long losing steak

SUU faced UNLV on tuesday and the final score was 21-12. The hitting for the mighty t birds was amazing but the pitching was horrible besides this outing from the new guy recently from tommy john surgery KC Sandstrom. His velocity and off speed stuff made news all around the nation. Everyone was surprised when his strike out wasnt on sports center because he made the batter look foolish. Todays game was against northern colorado in a great pitching duel SUU didnt come on top when they lost 3-2. SUU will play Northern Colorado for two more games on Friday and Saturday

SUUs baseball weekend vs St. Marys

The SUU Thunderbirds baseball team fought hard this weekend but got swept by St. Marys. Feb 17th
opened the season with a 2-1 defeat. Although it was a tough lost there are some positives that happened during the game. Junior pitchre Kelsey Outram allowed just two runs while recording three strikeouts, but was outdueled by Gaels ace Martin Agosta. On Saturday the SUU baseball team struggled though losing 9-2. Although being down two games in the best of 3 series, SUU fought hard the last game and showed a lot of positives that will be carried onto the rest of the year. The last game was in extra innings and the we lost 2-1. I didnt play this series but I am hopefully back soon.

Opening day for the T birds

The Southern Utah University baseball team opens its 2012 season this weekend with a visit to Moraga, Calif. for a three-game series with the Saint Mary’s Gaels. We need to do good this time and put up some wins because  the  Gaels swept the series over us on our home field last season. First pitch is for this weekend is set for Friday at 3 p.m. (MST) at Louis Guisto Field. I wont be able to play today because I am still recovering from surgery but I am hoping I dont miss anymore games!!

The baseball season is almost here and the Polls came out

2012 Summit League Baseball Preseason Poll
         Team                       Points (1st)
   1.   Oral Roberts                 36 (6)
   2.   Western Illinois             27
   3.   South Dakota State       25
   4.   North Dakota State       21
   5.   Southern Utah              19 (1)
   6.   Oakland                       11
   7.   IPFW                            8

So the polls came out for the 2012 baseball season and we are picked to finish 5th place but a thing I thought was interesting was that we received a first place vote.  I believe teams will overlook us this year and I think we will do alot of surprising. I think we have the team to take first this year and I am excited for the season to start. Our first game is against St. Marys on Friday! Lets get a win to start the year off right

The baseball season is almost here.

The baseball season for Southern Utah University is about here. Our first game is less than a month away and we are up against Saint Mary's. The first game is in California and it is on Friday, Feb 17.  I should be excited and thrilled but I have something else on my mind, my elbow. Last year in  February, I had Tommy John surgery, which is where your tendon in your elbow is torn so they replace it with a tendon from your wrist. It has almost been a year since my surgery and my arm is not a hundred percent better yet. It is annoying that I am not completely healed yet because all I want to do is get on the mound and compete. I keep on having pain in my elbow and icing is not making it any better.  So sometime within the next few days, I am going to go to the doctor once again and see if they  can do anything to make me better. Wish me luck, I will keep you posted with my elbow and my baseball season.
